RumChata (Horchata Con Ron) is a new cream based liqueur created by Tom Maas (former marketing executive for Beam Distillers). Apparently about ten years or so ago, while Tom was still working for Beam, he was trying to help the company penetrate into the Latin American market looking for ways to make bourbon a more popular spirit. During this time, he was introduced to a non-alcoholic beverage called horchata which was popular in Central America. The beverage must have made an impression on him, because a few years later when he retired, Tom decided to create a his own alcoholic beverage based upon the creamy horchata he remembered (which was apparently made from coconut milk, crushed rice, nuts, cinnamon and other spices).
After some experimentation with a variety of ingredients and popular spirits, Tom created his own cinnamon forward recipe based upon Real Dairy Cream and Caribbean Rum.
This year at the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival, I ran into Lisa Cunningham who works for Glazer’s Of Canada Llc, the company responsible for bringing RumChata (Horchata Con Ron) into the Alberta market. I was offered a sample bottle of RumChata and asked to share my thoughts about this relatively new cream liqueur here on my website.

” … Maybe I am imagining the smell of steamed rice, but the scents of cinnamon, rum-like brown sugar, vanilla and dairy cream are all very apparent in the breezes above my glass. As I examine the glass further, I seem to also sense some mild indications of crushed almonds as well as perhaps a hint of chocolate in the air above my glass as well … “

Demerara County (in Guyana) is popular across the world for its rich, three hundred year history of rum production. Using a combination of old wooden stills in conjunction with modern stills and distilling techniques, Demerara Distillers Ltd. (DDL), has built a reputation for outstanding quality and consistent production. In fact, Demerara Distillers is the currently the largest supplier of bulk Caribbean Rum to Europe and North America.
One of the specialty products produced by Demerara Distillers is El Dorado (Golden Rum) Cream Liqueur which the El Dorado website describes as:
“A rich Cream Liqueur made with 5 Year Old Demerara Golden Rum.”
The spirit is of course a creamy liqueur which melds authentic El Dorado Rum with real dairy cream and natural flavours and spices. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and occupies the same market niche as Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlua.

Amarula is a relatively new cream liqueur from South Africa which has recently been made available in my market. This is a cream based alcohol liqueur produced from cream (of course), the fruit of the African Marula Tree (also known as the Elephant Tree), and sugar. It is bottled at 17% alcohol by volume, and occupies the same market niche as Bailey’s Irish Cream and Kahlua.
I have received several mini (50 ml) bottles of Amarula over the past two years (usually attached as a free mini sampler to the neck of a larger 750 ml spirit). I usually enjoy the free sampler in my morning coffee or drizzled over ice-cream, but with my most recent mini bottle, I decided to write a review.
The product is imported into Alberta by PMA (Peter Mielzynski Agencies Ltd.), and is available in a 375 ml, as well as 1000 ml and 1750 ml configurations.

“… I detect some mild chocolate and coffee aromas with hints of butterscotch, vanilla, and a light nuttiness akin to hazelnut. Within these familiar cream liqueur scents is a zesty citrus component which seems to bring a little life to the glass elevating the familiar into something exotic …”

Sortilège Maple Cream is a Canadian Whisky based cream liqueur produced by Mondia Alliance Wine and Spirits in Montreal, Canada. It’s construction is apparently based upon an authentic ‘heritage’ recipe using the highest grade all natural Canadian Maple Syrup, farm fresh dairy cream, and authentic Canadian Whisky. The product arrives in a 750 ml bottle and is sold at 17 % alcohol by volume.

Forty Creek Whisky expanded their portfolio last fall with three new whisky products added in time for Christmas, Copper Pot Reserve, Portwood Reserve 2012, and Forty Creek Cream Liquor. Copper Pot Reserve is a new premium whisky built upon the success of the distilleries flagship brand Forty Creek Barrel Select, and Portwood Reserve 2012 is the second edition bottling of their successful Portwood Reserve which was originally released in 2009. Something a little different for the distillery is their new Forty Creek Cream Liquor. This Cream Liquor is a product of fresh dairy cream blended with Forty Creek’s finest spirits and of course their award-winning Forty Creek Whisky. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and is meant as an after dinner drink to be sipped on its own or in your afternoon coffee.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“… The Forty Creek Cream displays itself in the glass a rich light caramel/beige colour with a smooth creamy texture. The nose brings forth nuances of creamy chocolate, butterscotch/caramel, vanilla, hints of cinnamon, and light almost indistinguishable dabs of cocoa and coffee. A mild spicy influence of Canadian Whisky drifts into the breezes above the glass as well …”

Northern Lights Eggnog is a new rum based premix from Highwood Distillers. Highwood produced 500 cases for the Western Canadian market this Christmas, and I was given a sample bottle by the distillery to sample at my leisure (and to provide feedback to the distillery).
I have been told by the distillery that Northern Lights Eggnog is produced with real rum from the distillery (their Highwood Brand) and uses (as much as possible) authentic natural ingredients. I admit I was very curious and I thought it would be fun to do an ‘official’ review here on the website.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“…I am quite pleased by what I see after I pour myself a little of the premixed eggnog into my glass. This looks rich and creamy in the glass and the ‘eggnog’ aroma has a nice firm imprint of rum and a nice mild spiciness. The vanilla is obvious and I sense hints of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, but, none of the spices seem overpowering or out of balance. This is going to be an easy-going eggnog as far as spiciness is concerned and one in which the rum is allowed to flourish in the mix….”

Last week I reviewed Ceili’s Cream Cappuccino and I found it to be a likable cream liqueur with a nice firm coffee flavour. This week I had a chance to taste another Cream Liqueur from Highwood Distilleries, the lightly flavoured Ceili’s Cream. Ceili (pronounced Kay-lee) is an Irish word for a sort of community get-together complete with music, song, dance, and of course, a little food and the drink. Thus Ceili’s Cream is produced to be a Cream Liqueur suitable for such an occasion. It is a product of Highwood Distillers, and is a cream liqueur which melds authentic Canadian Whisky with a lightly flavoured cream. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and occupies the same market niche as Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlua.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“…The flavour in the mouth is rather sweet with butterscotch and vanilla accented by hints of mocha. The rye influence is very noticeable, and I suspect that some persons will really like this while others would prefer the rye to be more buried in the cream and butterscotch. I also taste a little hint of spice…”

It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and occupies the same market niche as Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlua.
I was given a sample of the Ceili’s Cream Cappuccino by the Highwood Distillers Marketing team, and I am happy to share my review here on my website:
Here is an Excerpt from that review:
“…When poured, the Ceili’s Cappuccino is light brown in colour with a creamy appearance similar to that of melted ice-cream. The aroma of coffee is obvious, but we catch glimpses of other scents and smells as well. Some light cocoa, some butterscotch and a bit of vanilla rise into the breezes as well…”
