Review: Pyrat Rum XO Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 19, 2013

Pyrat_Rum_XO_ReservePyrat Rum is owned by Patrón Spirits, a company created in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria, and Martin Crowley. The company does not own a distillery, rather they act as a third-party company sourcing what they believe to be the best stocks for their products and blending them according to their own formulas. Recently I accepted a sample bottle of the Pyrat Rum XO Reserve provided through Select Wines and Spirits.

Review: Pyrat Rum XO Reserve

“… The initial nose brings forward a candied orange/tangerine scent which immediately reminds me of Grand Marnier. The rum smells rather sweet and the nose has a light wine-like quality. Impressions of green grapes seem to be underneath. Further nosing of the rum brings reminders of lemons, butterscotch, and something spicy like cinnamon and cloves …”

Please enjoy my review which includes a delicious Orange Daiquiri recipe.

Cheers Everyone!

Review: Reposado Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 8, 2012

Patron Tequila is a pure 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila made from agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. This Agave is 6 to 7 years old when harvested, and the heart of the plant or the piña is all that is used. These piñas are cut and slowly steamed in traditional masonry ovens for 79 hours. The steamed piñas are then shredded and placed into a traditional stone pit, where they are broken into finer pieces with large stone milling wheels called “Tahonas”. The resulting juice is fermented for 72 hours in a wooden fermentation vat, and distilled twice in copper pot stills.

Patrón Reposado Tequila is a blend of unique tequilas which have been aged in oak barrels for an average of six months. I received a sample bottle of the Patron Silver Tequila from Diamond Estates Wine and Spirits, who are the local distributor Patron Spirits.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… When I brought the glass to my nose, light scents of caramel and mildly punky agave were rising from the glass, and he initial aroma is very enticing. As the glass sits some light scents of sandalwood develop and some hints of honey and vanilla. The decanted glass has a nice ‘earthy’ aroma with fruity accents of broiled zucchini and oven baked squash softening the more pungent agave and muting the peppery spice we usually encounter in a highland tequila… “

Review: Patrón XO Cafe

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 24, 2012

Patrón XO Cafe is a blend of the premium Patrón Silver Tequila and the natural essence of fine coffee. According to the Patron website, the taste of this agave coffee spirit is dry, rather than sweet, with notes of chocolate and vanilla. It is suggested that the spirit is meant not only for sipping, but also as a premium cocktail ingredient, or as a delectable dessert topping.

I received a sample of the Patrón XO Cafe from Diamond Estates Wine and Spirits, who are the local distributor Patron Spirits.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…The initial flavour is rich with coffee and vanilla, underlain with agave. The flavour is sweet rather than dry, and there is a nice peppery bite which is working well with the overall flavour. As I sip I begin to sense that the sweetness is similar to cane syrup and the mouth-feel has that syrupy texture as well…”

As well, I have included a nice recipe from the Patron website with the review which they call, Dark Spell.

Please enjoy the recipe and the review!

Cheers!
