Review: Potter’s Traditional Dark Navy Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 30, 2012

According to Highwood DistillersPotter’s Traditional Dark Navy Rum is an imported Caribbean dark rum. I have been told that the rum is not an infant spirit, and based upon Canadian Law, all rum in Canada must be aged for at least one year in oak barrels. Apparently the rum was aged prior to importation; however, because Highwood stores the reserves in oak barrels in their aging warehouse, it would be true to say that some aging in Canada also occurs.

Potter’s Dark Navy Rum is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume, and is sold in a 750 ml glass bottle, or in 1.14 and 1.,75 litre plastic PET bottles. I was provided with a sample of the 750 ml glass bottle directly from the folks at Highwood for the purpose of this review.

Here is an excerpt:

“… The first sip brings strong impressions of molasses and caramel with strands of licorice and musty tobacco running right through the middle of the flavour. Some oak spices are apparent too, and they are mingling with that molasses and caramel giving me indications of maple, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and brown sugar… “

Review: Pusser’s (Blue Label) Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 29, 2011

Pusser’s Rum is advertised as the original rum of the British Royal Navy. And it is a fact that for over 300 years it was a tradition in the British Navy that each member of the crew was issued a daily ‘tot’ of rum. This tradition began in 1655, and by 1731, the tradition of the daily ‘tot’ was in general use throughout the British Navy. As it was the ship’s purser who was responsible for issuing the rum. The Rum became known as Pusser’s Rum in a sort of slang derivation of the term ‘Purser’s Rum’.

Although the naval tradition of the daily tot had ended, in 1979 Charles Tobias obtained the rights and the blending information for the British Naval Rum, and formed Pusser’s Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. His company produces their Pusser’s Rum following the blending information and the traditions of the Admiralty, including producing the rum from wooden pot stills just as the had been the tradition for over 200 years.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

…This is a little hot and spicy in the initial mouth feel. The rum has a fresh oaky flavour with tannins disguised as tangy orange zest. As well, a firm vanilla and a light toffee complement this spicy oak and serves to temper its bite. There are some caramel flavours and some baking spices which give the rum depth…

Review: Pusser’s 15 Year Old Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 17, 2011

Today, I thought it would be fun to bring back my very first ‘published’ review. To give you a bit of history, even before I had my website opened up I had received a request from Mike Streeter asking me if I would write a review he could publish on his Rum Culture website, Rum Connection.

The review I wrote for Mike was for Pusser’s 15 Year Old Rum.  Although I had been posting rambling reviews on web forums like The Ministry of Rum for about three months, this review was the first one which I wrote with the conscious knowledge that people would be taking what I say seriously.

The review was a smashing success for not only myself, but also for Rum Connection, and it spawned a relationship (and friendship) between myself and Mike that thrives to this day.

Here is an excerpt from my first review published on Rum Connection:

“…My word what a taste experience.  A full thrust of spice and brown sugar.  Not that pale yellow brown sugar you buy in most grocery stores but the rich dark brown sugar you find in specialty shops and bakeries.  The spices hint at hot cinnamon and allspice. The mouth is oily leaving these hot spices lingering…”
