According to Highwood Distillers, Potter’s Superior White Rum is sourced in the Caribbean. They do not specify a country of origin (which may mean that the rum is sourced from more than one location), and they do not make any age claim. However, I have been told that the rum in the bottle is not an infant spirit, and I can verify that based upon Canadian Law all rum in Canada must be aged for at least one year in the oak barrel. And according to my understanding, all the rum used in the Potter’s blend has been aged for at least a year its the country of origin. As well, some of the rum is also additionally aged in oak barrels at the Highwood facility in High River, Alberta. The blend is charcoal filtered to be clear, and then is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“… The rum in the glass is crystal clear with no hints of colour at all. It displays a bit of a candied flair when I bring it to my nose, with scents reminiscent of cotton candy and ever so light hints of candy cane. There are very light notes of caramel and brown sugar, banana, and citrus zest and maybe even a little fresh from the oven meringue… “

According to Highwood Distillers, Potter’s Traditional Dark Navy Rum is an imported Caribbean dark rum. I have been told that the rum is not an infant spirit, and based upon Canadian Law, all rum in Canada must be aged for at least one year in oak barrels. Apparently the rum was aged prior to importation; however, because Highwood stores the reserves in oak barrels in their aging warehouse, it would be true to say that some aging in Canada also occurs.
Potter’s Dark Navy Rum is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume, and is sold in a 750 ml glass bottle, or in 1.14 and 1.,75 litre plastic PET bottles. I was provided with a sample of the 750 ml glass bottle directly from the folks at Highwood for the purpose of this review.
Here is an excerpt:
“… The first sip brings strong impressions of molasses and caramel with strands of licorice and musty tobacco running right through the middle of the flavour. Some oak spices are apparent too, and they are mingling with that molasses and caramel giving me indications of maple, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and brown sugar… “

Highwood Distillers of High River, Alberta was created as Sunnyvale Distillers in 1974. The distillery has seen moderate growth since its initial start up which has increased during the last several years as Highwood has began to assert itself as a major player in the Canadian Distilling Industry.
Although primarily known for their whisky, I have found that Highwood produces a quality rum. Momento Amber Rum from Highwood Distillers is a Demerara blend of rums aged in charred oak barrels at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The rum itself, is imported from the world famous Demerara County in Guyana, which has a 300 year tradition of producing top quality rums. Here is an Excerpt from my review:
“…A light honeyed brown sugar aroma with spicy accents rises into the air after I swirl my glass. Long skinny legs trail quickly back into the rum. A vague hint of anise and orange peel oils drift into the merry little breezes. Finally a nice imprint of vanilla and oak set themselves into the aroma as well. Everything in the nose is light and clean. This is very nice and bodes very well for what comes next…”

Last week I took a little holiday from my regular routine and traveled 250 miles south to visit one of the last independent distillers of whisky in Canada. The trip took me 40 miles south of Calgary Alberta, to the town of High River, nestled beside the Rocky Mountains on the western edge of the prairies.
High River is a great little town full of bustle and western charm. I couldn’t resist the urge to spend a little time just driving through the town, visiting a few of the local businesses and taking in the atmosphere of the place and the people. What I found was a town of friendly people with a solid blue collar work ethic. They all seemed to bustling around doing something important. But in spite of this apparent busyness, they were more than happy to help me out with directions to the local sights and even willing to share a story or two about the local history.
Highwood Distillery is the only Albertan owned distillery in the world. It sits in the heart of the High River community, producing 300,000 cases of bottled spirits per year.

Highwood Distillers are from my home province in Alberta Canada. Obviously with no locally grown sugar cane in my province, this rum must be imported. A quick check of the bottle only indicates that the rum originates from a blend of fine rums from the Caribbean. A description which does not really tell me much as to my knowledge all imported rum in Canada originate in the Caribbean.
When I talked to a Highwood representative, at the recent Rocky Mountain Food and Wine Festival in Edmonton, I mentioned that the their White Rum tasted like it was from Guyana to me. He confirmed that the blend was indeed predominantly a demerara blend. I forgot to ask him whether this was always the case with Highwood rums, a question I must remember the next time we speak.
Now this is a local brand, only available in western Canada, but I decided that reviewing a local product would not be a bad idea. So without further introduction, let me present Highwood Imported White Rum:
