Top 30 Rums Countdown # 19 – 5 Barrel Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2012

Top 305 Barrel Rum5 Barrel Rum is a premium aged rum produced in Belize, (the northernmost mainland country of Central America).  According to the producer, Travellers Liquors Limited, the rum is made from locally grown Belize sugar cane which is cut and crushed in a manner which retains its natural flavors. As well, all of the rum is aged in Kentucky oak barrels for a full 5 years. It is blended to be a full-bodied rum with the well-rounded taste which results from oak barrel aging.

When I reviewed the 5 Barrel Rum last January, I called it a “Rum Lover’s Rum”. My Judging Panel agreed and after the scores were counted, this wonder from Belize wound up at spot number 19 on the Countdown List of the Best Rums in the World:

# 19 – 5 Barrel Rum

“… The initial flavour of the rum is full of caramel and butterscotch melded into the oak spices. Some light orange peel weaves in and out and deeper down lurks a wonderfully rich tobacco flavour. Just as I noticed upon the nose, the rum grows in the glass as you slowly sip it. Brown sugar and baking spices (nutmeg, vanilla and spicy cinnamon) begin to appear alongside the oak spices and the tobacco…”

Review: Kuknat Coconut Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 7, 2012

Travellers Liquors Limited has been involved in the production of rum in Belize since the early 1960s originally working with independent distillers. In 1989, Tavellers acquired their own distillery and has remained in full control of the brand ever since. Their Kuknat Coconut Rum is a flavoured rum based upon the blending of the intense flavour and aroma of Coconut palm with the sweet flavour of molasses rum and represents over fifty years of experience in the art of rum blending by the Perdomo family which owns and controls Travellers Liquors limited..

Recently, I was given a bottle of Kuknat Rum by a representative of Travellers Liquor Canada for the purpose of this review:

Here is an excerpt:

“… The thickened consistency of the flavoured rum coats the palate allowing the flavours to linger as you sip. This is a sweet liqueur-like spirit with the flavour of coconut clearly on display. The flavours of rum and molasses wind in and out with impressions of butterscotch and oak spice lying under the coconut…”

Review: 5 Barrel Rum (Travellers)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 29, 2012

Travellers’ 5 Barrel Rum is a premium aged rum brand produced in Belize, (the northernmost mainland country of Central America). Belize is a former British Colony, and lies just south of Mexico with the Caribbean Sea to the east and Guatemala to the west and south. The producer of 5 Barrel Rum, Travellers Liquors Limited has been involved in the production of  rum in Belize since the early 1960′s originally working with independent distillers. In 1989, Travellers acquired full control of their own distillery, and they have remained in full control of their own brands ever since.

The 5 Barrel Rum is made from locally grown Belize sugar cane. According to the Travellers website, this cane is cut and crushed in a manner which retains its natural flavors, and the all of the rum is aged in Kentucky oak barrels for a full 5 years. It is blended to be a full-bodied rum with the well-rounded taste which results from oak barrel aging.

Recently, I was given a bottle of 5 Barrel Rum by a representative of Travellers Liquor Canada for the purpose of this review. Here is an excerpt:

“…As I let the glass breathe, the tobacco and the oak scents deepened. They were joined by wonderful sweet baking spices filled with rich brown sugar, spicy cinnamon, light vanillans and hints of nutmeg.  This one of those rums that grows in the glass as it breathes. The aroma is rich and deep and wonderfully in balance…”

Review: Traveller’s White Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 22, 2011

Traveller’s White Rum is another product of Traveller’s Liquors Limited. This is the second White Rum in their portfolio and is designed to be a full-bodied white rum suitable for bringing robust character into the cocktail experience.

I was given a bottle of Traveller’s White Rum by Blake Christensson of Traveller’s Liquor Canada for the purpose of this review:

“…The Traveller’s White Rum has a clean mouth-feel with a light softness in the mouth. The caramel/butterscotch flavour of the rum is mild, and to be honest the first sip of rum continues to give me a tequila-like impression. (Don’t worry rum drinkers, there is none of that hot pepper that tequila is famous for.) The flavour impression I do receive on the palate is lightly earthy and somewhat grassy, with the rum carrying very light dollops of citrus flavour and lime zest…”

Review: Cristal Parrot Lite Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 20, 2011

Cristal Parrot Lite Rum is a product of Belize, the northern-most mainland country of Central America. A former British Colony, Belize lies just south of Mexico with the Caribbean Sea to the east and Guatemala to the west and south. Traveller’s Liquors Limited has been involved in the production of rum in Belize since the early 1960s originally working with independent distillers. In 1989 Travellers acquired full control of their own distillery and has remained in full control of their own brands ever since.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… The aroma from the glass carries a soft rummy caramel accented by cotton candy and perhaps a hint of mint. It is lightly vegetal indicating to me that very little if any aging has occurred. If you give the glass a little time to decant, the aroma turns slightly grassy and the caramel notes build up slightly.  Things are pleasant …”

Review: Travellers 3 Barrel Aged Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 29, 2011

A few weeks ago I published my review of the Travellers 1 Barrel Rum. I never mentioned it at the time but this review was actually the first of several which I plan to write as I work my way through the Traveller’s line-up. The rum which is the focus of my review today is a brand new rum in that line-up, Travellers 3 Barrel Rum. The 3 Barrel is only available (for now) in Alberta which is the first place the rum has been exported, and in Belize where the rum is produced.

Belize is the northernmost mainland country of Central America. it is a former British Colony and lies just south of Mexico with the Caribbean Sea to the east and Guatemala to the west and south. Travellers Liquors Limited has been involved in the production of  Rum in Belize since the early 1960s originally working with independent distillers. In 1989 Travellers acquired full control of their own distillery and has remained in full control of their 1 Barrel brand ever since.

I was given a bottle of 3 Barrel Rum by Blake Christensson of  Travellers’ Liquor Canada for the purpose of this review. Here is an excerpt:

“…The 3 Barrel Rum has much more to offer as a sipper than the 1 Barrel Rum. The flavour is smoother and richer as the oak has set its imprint into the rum in a delightful way. Butterscotch and baking spices lead out onto the palate with a nice marmalade accent from the oak. The vanilla and the light tobacco flavours are in ample evidence and everything is easy to sip and easy to appreciate…”

As well I have included my recipe for 3 Barrel Punch.

Please enjoy the review and the recipe!
