Barceló Añejo Rum
Review: Barceló Añejo Rum (70.5pts)
a review by Chip Dykstra (AKA Arctic Wolf)

This was one of my original reviews published on the Ministry of Rum. It is not as detailed as my more recent reviews but the comments reflect my true opinion of my enjoyment.
IN THE BOTTLE (4.5/5)
I like the presentation, The bottle actually enticed me to buy the rum untasted.
IN THE GLASS (6.5/10)
I was surprised at the aroma which hit my nostrils. It had a turpentine like tone to it mixed with burnt molasses. This smells very bitter and very rough to me. Given enough time in the glass a few sweeter notes begin to present themselves.
IN THE MOUTH (42.0/60)
During the first tasting I did with this rum I said, “Absolutely dreadful. The rum tastes like it has been mixed with paint thinner.” I have since revised my estimate as the Rum did begin to taste better over time. However I still feel this is bitter and metallic. The advertising says the younger rums in the blend give it a sharp taste, I believe this is a big understatement.
IN THE THROAT (11.5/15)
Not as bad as the flavour. I can now taste some spices that belong, as well as a more polished sugary note. However still a very bitter elixir.
The AFTERBURN (6.0/10)
Slowly over time I sipped at this and mixed it until the bottle was finished. By the end I did like it a little more and raised my original rating accordingly. But it is not an item I will repurchase. There is just too many rums in the same price range I like better.

Have you checked the LCBO website (http://www.lcbo.com/entry.html) for distribution information?

The SAQ in quebec had Barcelo Gran Anejo listed. They had a few stores with them in the Gatineau region. So, if your not far from the quebec border, this may be a possibility…

Hopefully Monty, this will be one of those where you like it more than I. For the record, lots of persons disagree with my opinions of the Barcelo rums.
