St-Rémy à la Crème is a rich and creamy liqueur which melds authentic French Brandy with smooth cream and the soft subtle flavours of caramel, chocolate and walnut. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume and occupies the same market niche as Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlua. The producer, St-Rémy, has been making French Brandy ever since the distillery’s opening in 1886, and the à la Crème is their latest product creation.
I was given a sample bottle of this new product by the Select Wines Marketing Team here in Alberta, and I am happy to share my review of the very first Brandy based cream liqueur I have tried.
In the Bottle 4/5
I have a split personality when it comes to the St-Rémy à la Crème bottle presentation. Right off I want to make it clear that I think this bottle ‘pops’ and really stand out from the crowd. As you can see from the photo on the left, the bottle is colourful and very eye-catching.
However, it is also just a little too ‘cutesy’ for my taste. The graphics have an appearance which is as likely to entice a young child as it is to enthrall an adult beverage consumer. I am not sure I want an alcoholic beverage in my refrigerator that young children will be drawn to.
In the Glass 9/10
The Creme liqueur has a rich light caramel/beige colour with a smooth creamy texture. A pleasant nose carries soft caramel notes with embedded chocolate and coffee tones. There are an even softer notes of hazelnut and vanilla. The overall effect is very suave and luxurious.
In the Mouth 57/60
I was a little afraid when I took my first sip of the St-Rémy à la Crème that the flavours might be too sweet and rich, and that the oakiness which brandy is famous for might be a little dominating. But, that is not what I found at all. Everything is soft and smooth, and the flavour of the à la Crème is exquisite!
The balance between the caramel and the chocolate is just right. The hints of coffee goodness and the subtle flavours of the walnut and the vanilla entice me further. Finally there is a hint of soft spiciness, (cinnamon and nutmeg) which provides just the right compliment to the overall flavour.
The à la Crème also tasted great in a few cocktails I tried. I mixed a little with some Mount Gay Black Eclipse Rum as suggested to me by the Remy Martin product rep and the resulting cocktail, Black Velvet, was amazing. Then (following another lead from that same product rep) I mixed the à la Crème with Cointreau, and the next cocktail, the Orange Velvet Kiss, was just as good (see recipes below).
In the Throat 14/15
Because of the luxurious texture, the soft flavours seem to last on the palate and in the back of my throat well after the glass is consumed. In spite of the richness of the creamy liqueur, the flavours do not become cloying, rather they just softly fade away and leave you with the feeling that you have allowed yourself to be pampered just a little.
The Afterburn 9.5/10
As a dessert drink or an evening indulgence, I found the that the à la Crème was simply wonderful. As an ingredient in luscious cocktails it is just as exciting!

I thought I would offer two dessert recipes suggested to me by the Remy Martin Product Rep, Laurie Christensen. One recipe is for the guys and mixes the St-Rémy à la Crème with Mount Gay Rum, and the other is for the gals and mixes with Remy Martin’s fantastic orange liqueur, Cointreau.
For the Men:
1/2 oz Mount gay Black Eclipse Rum
1 oz St-Rémy à la Crème
Serve and Enjoy!
For the Ladies:
Orange Velvet Kiss
1/3 oz Cointreau
1 oz St-Rémy à la Crème
Mix in a small rocks glass with ice
Serve and Enjoy!

98+ I haven’t met this bottle yet…but I want to.
Very loosely we may put my scores into terms that you may be familiar with on a Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal scale as follows:
70 – 79.5 Bronze Medal (Recommended only as a mixer)
80 – 89.5 Silver Medal (Recommended for sipping and or a high quality mixer)
90 – 95 Gold Medal (Highly recommended for sipping and for sublime cocktails.)
95.5+ Platinum Award (Highest Recommendation)
