About Me
I have been writing reviews of distilled spirits for over 3 years now. It began when I posted a few mad ramblings on the Ministry of Rum which gave my views on a few of the more popular Rum Brands. Soon after those ramblings were published, I was contacted by the owner of a website called Rum Connection. He was wondering if I would be interested in writing a few reviews for his website. I decided to give it a try, and the result was my first published review:
Pusser’s 15 Review
The people at Rum Connection apparently liked what I wrote, and during the next year I published about 15 reviews for them.
Reviewing rum was so much fun that I decided to create my website, but not just for Rum. I made the decision that I would discuss all distilled spirits, and when I opened this website in October of 2009, I made sure I added a few Whisky Reviews, some Gin Reviews and a couple Tequila Reviews such that most of the major distilled spirit categories were represented. (Since opening the website, I have expanded the range to also include Vodka Reviews as well as Brandy and Cognac.) Although my focus is primarily upon Rum and Whisky, it is my belief that acquiring knowledge and skill with respect to all spirits serves to broaden my perspective and is beneficial to my over-all understanding of distilled spirits..
For what it is worth, people (and industry) seem to like what I write. Since opening the website, I have been asked to act as a judge at major International Rum Competitions, as well as for the yearly Canadian Whisky Awards. On occasion, I have also been asked to provide specialized consulting services to certain Vodka and Rum Producers to help assess the quality and marketability of their products. Having said all of that, I think it would be true to state that the reviews on this website represents more of a knowledgeable layman’s perspective than that of a professional taster.
I hope you enjoy my reviews and find value in them; but always remember that an opinion is just that, an opinion. Do not take my writing too seriously, for opinions vary and in the end, only you can really decide if a spirit gives you enjoyment. Use my reviews as a guide, but trust your own tastes and preferences as well.

Hi there! I LOVE your website. It’s so comprehensive and helpful! I’m hoping you can help me out. I have a good friend who is an extensive rum collector with refined taste. I’m looking to get him a bottle of rum, that a very well educated rum collector would be happy, even proud to receive. I’m aware that he likes collecting unique Cuban rums, but other than that, I don’t know his taste. I am willing to spend up to $300 for a bottle, though I realize there can be some wonderful rums for less, I just don’t know where to begin. Any guidance would be much appreciated! Cheers!

My mother was going thru an estate sale of a relative who was a Vp of one of the main unions of the AFLCIO back in the 60s and friendly with JFK and Agnew. She found bottles of unopened Cuban rum in leather presentation cases and Tennessee whiskey from the 60s. They were with photos of said relative with these politicians, and she is assuming it was from meetings with the Union or perhaps some dinner/fundraising for their campaigns. Is there a person/place you would recommend she contact to see if any collectors would be interested in these bottles?
Arctic Wolf said
I am going to suggest you go to the forums at Whisky.com and Theministryofrum.com and pose you questions there. They seem to be very helpful in these matters.

Thank you! She wasn’t sure if she should just throw it out or what, so I asked her to hang on while I found an expert. Appreciate the info!

Hi Larry
I will not allow you to copy parts of my reviews for your commercial purposes, and I would consider any such copying an infringement of my intellectual property. However, it is perfectly acceptable to me for you to refer to my review and provide a link back to it. Something like…”Here is what the Rum Howler has to say…..(Link to Review).
Thank you for asking in advance and if you wish to communicate more directly on this topic you may email me.

Hi Chip,
Really like the site and reviews. When do you think you’ll do a review on English Harbour, especially the 5 year. One of my favorites.
Laurence
Arctic Wolf said
Hi Lawrence
I am always asked when I am going to review a particular sample. In the case of English Harbour, the distributors of the product have suggested they would like reviews published, but they have been unwilling to provide a sample. Since I have over 20 samples in my queue willingly provided by other distributors, it is unlikely I will review English Harbour this Summer. My rule of thumb is to try to review spirits which are provided to me from Industry first, and spirits from my own collection second.
I have tried the English Harbour 5 in a casual setting with friends and I quite liked it ,although I had the impression that it was almost a flavoured rum rather than a straight rum.
Laurence said
Thanks for your take on the EH 5 yr, Chip. I’m moving on to sipping the English Harbour 1981 which really is a fantastic experience.
Great review on the Alberta Premium 30 Yr and I totally agree. Awesome! Managed to find one last week and it was worth the three days of searching.
I look forward to and appreciate all your reviews. Your evaluations are always well done and very close to how I would rate them. Saves me a lot of homework. Your review of Flor de Cana 12 yr was one of the best tips I’ve had all year.

Hi Chip,
I am the bar manager for an establishment in Vancouver called Calabash which is a Caribbean restaurant. We love rum here and i’ve referred to your site on numerous occasions for guidance on some of the products we carry. For this i thank you, your reviews are excellent.
I had two queries; Firstly, we are curious as to whether you are aware of any other rum heavy bars in Canada. The liquor laws in BC prevent us from having a massive collection, but i’ve put together what i think is a strong portfolio of 80 rums and i’m curious to know if there is anywhere else in Canada that is flying the flag for rum.
Secondly, with Tales of the Cocktail Vancouver just around the corner, i was wondering if you would be making it down to the city for the event. If so, we would love to see you down at Calabash for a drink.
Thanks for your time.
Jason
Arctic Wolf said
Thanks Jason
I’m glad my reviews are beneficial to your restaurant!
As to your first query, If their are many Rum Bars or Restaurants in Canada, then I am unaware of them as well. Although rum is becoming more and more popular, it still has a long ways to go. As to your second query, I appreciate the invite, but alas I am unable to attend very many functions outside of my own city. Although writing about rum is fun, my site (at this time) is non commercial and I cannot justify the expense of more than one or two “road trips” per year. The next festival I am attending is “Rum Renaissance” in Miami. Check out the link and maybe come on down as well.

Hello,
I am Cuban American and your reviews of “Rones de Cuba” are “spot on” specially the “Havana Club Cuban Barrel Proof”. At the end of march 2011 I’ll have a bottle of “Havana Club Selección de Maestros” that replaced the “Havana Club Cuban Proof” production on November 2010. My friends in Cuba tell me that “Havana Club Selección de Maestros” it is very similar to the “Havana Club Cuban Barrel Proof” but also different and better.
If you have the chance to sample a bottle of “Ron Varadero 5 años Añejo” (also extra añejo) do not hesitate a buy it. In my honest opinion is one of the best rums produced in Cuba today.
Contact me and I will send a sample of “Havana Club Selección de Maestros” for a taste and future review when my bottle arrives.
Your website is a joy for all rum lovers.
Sincerely,
Sergio Carlos Perez-More

Thank You very much Sergio.
Unfortunately, I will be unable to collect on your kind offer of a free sample. Sending Alcohol into Canada through our mail system is strictly illegal, and you precious sample would be dumped at the border by customs agents. The only samples I am allowed to receive legally from the US are full bottle samples in original packaging. (These must also go through customs. ) Perhaps when you receive your bottle you can leave a comment and let us know hoe the rum tastes!

Good day!
I love this blog! I frequently review it. I hope our paths cross soon, for I am in Edmonton for the next few months pursuing a graduate degree.
I am off to Cuba in a few days and I am hoping to get a few rums that are 1. rare; and 2. tasty. Do you have any suggestions? I really like Zacapa 23, Diplomatico reserva, Pyrat, some of the Renegades, etc. My collection is currently at 51 rums… and hoping to grow soon!
One recommendation I have for a review is Ron Millinario, of Peru. Just one step above Zacapa 23 etc. in my view. I found it in Costco in California of all places. What a steal at under $30.
Thanks for your rum contributions!

People should research the products they want at the location of there travel and even call the duty free shop or local store .This results in great savings as in canada we are allowed 1.14 litres after 48 hours .example i went to new york state and purchased 2 rm xo congnac 110.00 each (lcbo 238.00)duty free +cr cask 16 39.00 (99.00 lcbo )local store, cr xr 115.00 (lcbo 179.00 )duty free ,other high end rums and scotchs. All were bought and declared at the border. Spent 1000.00 and saved an estimated 1200.00.
So travel with alot of family of legal age and save big money on your next holiday shopping trip. This way of buying that special bottle for your collection should be pointed out . remember do your research and use the internet and phone.

Hi Chip,
I’ve been pondering of starting up a website to publish rum reviews for the last year or so. I’ve enjoyed your blog so much that I’m looking into it even more seriously. Of course, I don’t feel like jumping into until I familiarise myself a bit more with blog programs. I plan on doing this as a hobby, as I’ll most likely be reviewing bottles from my own collection (I don’t have any ‘connections’), but at the same time I want readers to be able to rely on a steady stream of publishings on my behalf. Any advice is appreciated!! I want to have fun and share my take on this spirit!
What I want to ask you more specificaly is I’d like to borrow (use) your review system, the Dykstra Method. I find your system very fair when it comes showcasing what a particular spirit is all about. Of course, I’ll only do this with your permission and with what you would consider fair as recognition.
Thanks for your time and inspiration!

Arctic Wolf said
As far as I know the distillery does not offers tours to the public, and I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to get as close to the operations as I did. This was a privilege which is not granted to very many persons as the operation is very lean and efficient, and I suspect they do not have the available manpower to provide regular tours.
I will say that everyone at the distillery treated me with the utmost respect, and I would certainly enjoy another visit.

Hey there. Could you do a review of the recently released “Crown Royal Black”?
Arctic Wolf said
Certainly, if I can convince Crown to send me a bottle…..
My policy is that I review industry samples first, and samples of my own choosing second. The samples from industry seem to be arriving a a fairly steady interval. I have about ten samples in the pipeline and by the time they are done I will probably have more. So I doubt that I would buy a bottle to review out of my own pocket until I am caught up.

Might I suggest you put a review date under the each review title? Also, any idea where I can find the Alberta Premium 25 years old rye that you recommended?
Arctic Wolf said
Hi Ray
That is an excellent suggestion. My posts are all dated on the front page but the actual reviews are not. I shall begin to do so. (It will take a bit of research to update everything so please have patience.)
I still see the Alberta Premium 25 year old here and there in Edmonton. But it is running out. My understanding is that it has disappeared from other provinces. The 25 Year Old was a Limited Edition Bottling, and I have no information about any plans to make any more. (We all fervently hope that they do.)
As for the Website for Alberta Distillers, They appear not to have one. The Brand is Owned by BeamGlobal, but they do not appear to have much information about this whisky on their website. Hopefully someone from BeamGlobal sees this inquiry and offers some insight. (I have had correspondence from Beam on my website in the past so this is not too farfetched.)

These older drams will be released in very limited amounts over the next decade while they work towards re-establishing Glenglassaugh as a premium distillery.
Good to see you at the show

Hello sir,
Nice website you have here. I really enjoyed your Canadian whisky reviews. I notice that in a lot of your photos you have those mini casks sitting around. Did you purchase them from Whisky Works in Ontario, by chance? Also, what have you aged in them? If you could provide any details I would greatly appreciate it, as I’m considering picking up a 3 litre barrel to put a new oak finish on some Canadian whisky.
Arctic Wolf said
Hi Mike:
The mini Casks you see are 1 litre Casks, I have picked up from various sources including Whisky Works. I have only used them once with a Canadian Whisky, The Canadian Club 100 proof. In that experiment I aced a previously well used barrel with home made Nanking Cherry brandy first, and then refinished the whisky for 6 weeks. It was awesome. Good Luck!!

Dear Sir:
We are a small distillery in Colorado and would like you to review our products.
Our website does not list all our products.
We now make a number of rums, vodkas and whiskey.
Thanks

Who would have thought of Rum lovers stranded in Edmonton. Our group of Rum lovers is 14 strong. We currently have over 235 rums in stock and keep adding. It would be interesting to dialouge with you and share some of the great tastes.

Chip,
your site is coming on well. It takes a lot of work to get them off the ground, but it is well worth the effort.
I will add a link to your blog tomorrow when I get to work. See you in Miami hopefully.
Cheers
