The Rum Howler Blog

(A website for Spirited Reviews)

A Sloe walk in the Jungle

When I am confronted with a rum which doesn’t initially please me,  I try to find a way to mix the rum that is pleasing to me. In the case of certain rums which have been finished in exotic wine casks, this can be quite a challenge.  The Renegade Rum Company produces several of these exotic rums. When I reviewed the Renegade Jamaica 2000, I was particularly challenged to find a nice cocktail.

I did, however after much effort, come up with what I affectionately call,  “A Sloe walk in the Jungle”.  I’ll  give you two versions of the bar drink,  the original version which I sent to my friend forrest for his seal of approval, and then his ‘suggested’ changes.  The name I came up for the cocktail is an effort to highlight the ‘jungle’ like character of the nose which I referred to in the review of that particular rum.

A Sloe Walk in the Jungle  (Original Version)

1 1/2 oz Renegade 2000 Jamaica Rum
1/2 oz    Triple Sec
1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
1 1/2 oz Orange  Juice
1/2 oz    Lime Juice

Build on 4 large Ice Cubes
Float 1/4 – 1/2 oz of Sloe gin

Garnish an orange slice, a Lime slice and a slice of pineapple.

Pin them with an Umbrella

A Sloe Walk in the Jungle  (forrest’s Version)

1 1/2 oz  Renegade 2000 Jamaica Rum
1/2 oz    Triple Sec
3/4 oz Pineapple Juice
3/4 oz Orange  Juice

1/2 oz    Lime Juice

Build on Ice
Float 1/4 – 1/2 oz of Sloe gin

Garnish an orange slice, a Lime slice and a chunk of pineapple.

Pin them with an Umbrella

As you see the versions differ only by the amount of juice each recipe calls for.  Being of good Canadian farming stock (country folk),  I tend to drink when I am thirsty, and hence usually add more ‘weak’ into my drinks than forrest, who hails from more a cultured Californian urban setting (city folk).  It’s good that the various gulfs which divide us never seem to hamper our growing friendship.

By the way both versions of the drink are ‘forrest approved“.  Visit his great site, a drink with forrest,  for more fantastic cocktail experiences.

As well the recipe works great other rums as well.
